Air travel and marijuana in the US and Canada

  • Secure areas of the airport (the area beyond the TSA screeners) are under federal control, and marijuana is not allowed in those areas.
  • The US federal government does not allow marijuana on airliners, either in carry-on bags, checked luggage, or cargo.
  • Passengers are not allowed to bring marijuana on any on board any aircraft, including in either carry on or checked baggage.
  • Passengers are allowed to carry drug-related paraphernalia on any aircraft, such as items that may be used to produce, conceal, or consume marijuana.
  • Marijuana that is prescribed for medical conditions (medical marijuana) has the same federal restrictions as marijuana purchased for recreational use (recreational marijuana).
  • US federal laws apply in every part of the US, including those states or other jurisdictions that allow recreational marijuana.

  • Air travelers are allowed to fly with marijuana on domestic Canadian flights
  • Marijuana is not allowed on any international flight that is entering or leaving Canada.
  • While some jurisdictions do not allow the sale of marijuana, possession is allowed throughout Canada.
